The Fault-Tolerant Cluster-Sending Problem

The emergence of blockchains is fueling the development resilient data management systems that can deal with Byzantine failures due to crashes, bugs, or even malicious behavior. As traditional lack scalability required for modern data, several recent explored using sharding. Enabling these sharded designs requires two basic primitives: a primitive reliably make decisions within cluster and communicate between clusters. Unfortunately, such communication has not yet been formally studied. In this work, we improve on situation by formalizing cluster-sending problem: problem sending message from one system another in fault-tolerant manner. We also establish lower bounds complexity under both crashes failures. Finally, present worst-case optimal protocols meet practical settings. such, our work provides strong foundation future systems.
